How we know what we tell you

A wrong "discontinued" sends people hunting for a bottle that is still on the shelf. So we are strict about evidence, open about doubt, and we always show our sources.

Statuses

Each fragrance has one main status. When the eau de parfum and the body mist differ, we show both.

  • Available In stock at the shops we follow. A fact from our own data, not a claim that it is still being made.
  • In production Still being made, confirmed by a person or an official source.
  • At risk Early signs, such as a license ending or stock running low.
  • Likely discontinued Several independent signs agree, but no official word.
  • Discontinued Stopped, confirmed by an official source about this fragrance and checked by a person.
  • Back Back on sale. "Back for a while" when the return is temporary.

The signs we weigh

No single sign decides. We combine independent kinds of evidence, and a fragrance only gets a warning status when at least two kinds agree, or when there is an official statement.

  • Official word: a statement by the brand or a written answer from its customer service about this fragrance. The only kind that can confirm a discontinuation.
  • Licenses: a license that ends or moves to another company. It concerns the whole brand, so it raises a flag but never decides on its own. When the brand moves to a new license holder or starts making its own fragrances, it counts for less.
  • Shops: most of the shops that sold it have been out of stock for at least 30 days, measured on our daily price records. A shop that only carries a small selection of a brand counts for half, and fewer than three shops never count for much.
  • Prices: clearance prices well below the usual price at two or more shops.
  • Second-hand market: eBay asking prices well above the shop price, or many listings that call it discontinued. A weak sign: sellers like that word.
  • Brand websites: a product page that disappears from the brand's own site, checked once, and only where the site's terms allow us to look.
  • Reports: forum and reader reports, read and entered by a person. A weak sign on its own.

When the warning signs fade and the fragrance is back in the shops, we say so too.

Certainty

Next to a status we say how sure we are:

  • Confirmed: an official source about this fragrance: the brand itself, or a written answer from its customer service. News about a license is about the whole brand, so it never confirms one fragrance on its own.
  • Likely: at least two independent kinds of evidence point the same way.
  • Rumored: early signs we are watching, never presented as fact.

Some brands only sell through their own shop or through representatives, and their website terms do not let us follow it. For those, "Likely" is usually the most we can say until the brand confirms it.

Our sources

  • Prices, stock, photos and barcodes from shops, through their official partner feeds.
  • Company filings, press releases and the trade press for license news. We keep the headline and the link, never the article.
  • Second-hand listings through the official eBay service, shown as asking prices, never as sold prices.
  • Brand websites, only where their terms allow it.

We do not copy fragrance databases or marketplaces, and we never get around logins or protections.

A person checks

Signals are weighed by rules we publish, not by an AI. Every status other than "Available" and every return is checked by a person first. License changes are checked against their source, a company filing or press release, before we publish them. A license ending is never enough on its own to call a fragrance discontinued.

Seasonal and limited editions

Holiday scents that come back every year and limited editions that were always meant to end are not "discontinued". They get their own labels and stay out of discontinued lists.

Corrections

Brands, shops and readers: if something is wrong, tell us, ideally with a source. Use the form on any fragrance page or email us; corrections go straight to our review queue. corrections@scentsunset.com
